In the observed Exhibition event format, 40 drivers enter qualifying. The qualifying classification places them into four 10-car heat races. The transfer system gives even a driver near the bottom of the qualifying order a route into the A Main.
| Stage | Observed rule | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying | 40 drivers ranked by lap time | Heat 1: ranks 1–10; Heat 2: 11–20; Heat 3: 21–30; Heat 4: 31–40 |
| Each Heat | 10 starters | Top five advance directly to A Main; remaining five go to B Main |
| Qualify Dash | Top two from each Heat | Eight drivers participate in the Dash |
| B Main | 20 starters | Top five transfer to A Main |
| A Main | 20 direct qualifiers + 5 transfers | 25-car main event |
The 15 B Main drivers who do not transfer occupy finishing positions 26–40 in the observed event structure..
The qualifying, heat and B Main structure is particularly useful for interpreting a poor initial qualifying position. Qualifying position is not the final result: heat and B Main transfers provide further opportunities to reach the main event.
