Metal Gear Solid Delta: Complete Guide
By "Giok 90" Giovanni Di Mare
Introduction
The guide was written with the intention of giving players a clear and useful reference while exploring that world. It follows the structure of the game from start to finish and gathers, in one place, everything: the full set of camouflage uniforms and face paints, their effects, and the exact conditions needed to obtain them; every Ga-ko and every Kerotan, described area by area with precise visual references; the complete food system with stamina values, interactions and all locations by area; the behaviour of each boss, both in the Delta version and in the previous version, and the most reliable ways to approach them with non‑lethal strategies; a detailed strategy to obtain Foxhound rank, both in the Delta version and in the Master Collection version; and much more.
Each section is written to be readable on its own, without assumptions. Whether someone is playing for the first time, returning after many years, or aiming for a meticulous completion run, the information is presented in a way that can be picked up and used immediately. The intention is simply to make the journey through the game clearer and more enjoyable while preserving the free approach that defines Snake Eater.

MGS3 Boss Battle Guide – All non-lethal strategies and rewards
• Ocelot Battle:
Before the battle get the thermal googles from the locker. When the battle starts hide under the bed and throw one or two stun grenades to knock out the first four enemies. Then take the underground tunnel to go to the opposite exit of the tunnel and tranquillize the fifth soldier from the tunnel. Be careful of the soldier on the roof. Exit the tunnel from the west side and tranquillize soldiers along the way. From far away tranquillize the soldier on the roof.
• Revolver Ocelot:
Shoot the hornet’s nest situated on a tree to scare Ocelot and give you a chance of free shots. Shoot the Markhor you will have another good chance. Don’t shoot Ocelot when he runs or immediately after he gets shot; instead hit him when he is still and when he reloads. Learn the spots and be careful with the Coral Snake. Headshot cause him to lose his hat, giving you another window to shoot him. Tranquillizing him grants you the Animal camo (you will get it after the battle) that prevents you from shaking while using guns when your stamina is low, helping you to avoid to consume food in those circumstances.
• The Pain:
Hit The Pain as soon as possible at the very start of the battle. Remove his shield using a lethal weapon (grenades, M37, or Patriot if you are on NG+). Use the rock for cover and stay in the water when he attacks you. Keep in mind to use the cure menu to remove bullet bees. After removing his shield use Mk.22 to tranquillize him obtaining in this way Hornet Stripe camo. This camo gives you a special ability: when you shoot a hornet’s nest, the hornets harmlessly follow you while attacking enemy guards. If you are on NG+ run, wear Hornet Stripe Camo to reduce damage taken from him.
• The Fear:
When the battle starts, enter the cure menu to remove the arrow and the venom poisoning. Use thermal goggles to locate The Fear and shoot him with Mk 22. When he searches for food, throw him rotten food or a Poison Dart Frog (located in Chyornyj Prud) to poison him and have the chance for free shots. Keep in mind that at Extreme difficult, and if you are going for Foxhound rank, failing to prevent The Fear from eating causes an instant reset due to the fact that lack tranquillizing ammo. Tranquillize him to get Spider Camo that allows you to get significant high camo index in most areas although it consumes a lot of stamina.
• The End:
If you don’t want the Mosin Nagant and Camo Moss you can skip this battle by changing the date of PS5 8 real days after the save of the battle (quit the game, go offline, then change the date and reload).
If you don’t go for a zero-kill run, you can skip the battle also by shooting The End with SVD (located in the extra area Ponizojve West) immediately as you enter Ponizojve Warehouse Exterior.
But keep in mind that both methods prevent you from acquiring the Mosing Nagant, which is very useful against The Fury and can be useful also against Volgin and The Boss. Moreover, Moss camo is the best uniform of the game for many sections.
Keep in mind that if you shoot to barrels near The End at Ponizojve Warehouse Exterior the battle starts with The End having less stamina. At the start of the battle, usually the first zone when The End appears is reachable by going to Sokrovenno North and then taking the path to the upper left. If you don’t find him this way use the thermal googles to see his reverse footprints and the mic to hear his footsteps. When you locate him, freeze him by moving toward him very slow (if you are on NG+ use Spirit camouflage helps you significantly) and then aim at his head until he will say “I don’t think so” twice to get Moss Camo. This camo replenishes your stamina in outdoor daily areas and gives you significant camo index (up to 95%) in the grass. Relocate him using thermal googles to see his reverse footprints. If you caught the Parrot you can liberate it: it helps you to find The End through the Parrot’s voice. When you relocate The End, shoot him with the Mk.22 or move toward him very slow and hit him with Cig Gas Spray (located in Graniny Gorki Lab B1 West). When he falls, run way and then throw a stun grenade at him and again use the Mk.22. If he runs away follow his footprints and repeat the process. Tranquillize him to acquire the Mosin Nagant. Note: Don’t spend more than about three real world days after the save immediately before The End to avoid restarting from the Graniny Gorky cell and to avoid wasting time, especially if you are going for a speedrun.
• The Fury:
Round in a big circle, using the hallways along the area to avoid his attacks. If you start to burn, equip the Cardboard Box C (located in Groznyj Grad Southwest) to extinguish the flames instantly. Shoot the red pipes to extinguish the flames near the pipe. Hit The Fury with the Mosin Nagant with tactical reload for double shots. When The Fury has less than two life bars shoot him with mk22 for nearer hits. Tranquillize him give you Fire Camo that makes you immune from fire. If you go for a second playthrough on NG+ this camo is very useful against The fury himself.
• The Sorrow:
To skip this battle, when it starts go underwater and dive until you die. Then take a Revival Pill. This avoids wasting time, especially if you are going for a speedrun. Keep in mind that this method prevents you from acquiring Spirit Camo that makes your footsteps noiseless.
To obtain the Spirit camouflage walk along the river. You will see, and need to avoid, the bodies of every enemies and bosses that you killed, if you are not going for a zero-kills run. When you reached the end of the river avoid the sorrow’s attack by waling diagonally. At the very end of the battle, touch the body of The Sorrow and when you die, use the revival pill to obtain the Spirit Camo. You will get it after the battle when you take your equipment. This camo makes your footsteps noiseless and when you wear it, using CQC on guards restores your stamina.
• Volgin:
Keep your weapon unequipped when you don’t use it. This due to the fact that Volgin’s electric attacks empty your ammo. Use the Raiden Mask to distract him giving you free hits. Stay close to him, use CQC to avoid his attacks and hit him, than shoot him on his back with the Mosin Nagant (or Mk22). Take advantage when Ocelot distract Volgin. After he remains with two life bars crawling to avoid his first attack and repeat the CQC-Mosin Nagant (or Mk22) method. Tranquillizing him you will get Cold War camo. Immediately collect it when it drops before the cutscene start. Wearing this camo enemies shoot you only from behind and not when you face them. This feature is useful if you don’t aim at a zero alerts run. In both cases, wear it as soon as you collect it, in this way the next part, the bike chase, will be easier on the start because many soldier don’t shoot you.
• Shagohod
In the first part of the battle, shoot the treads with the RPG-7 and then the back of the Shagohod. In the second part of the battle, shoot again the treads and then hit Volgin with the Mosin Nagant (or Mk.22).
• The Boss
When the battle starts unequip your weapon to avoid The Boss disarming you. Wait for her to attack and you can beat her using almost only CQC. Wait for her to attack you, than start CQC and use Mk22 when she is on the ground. When she runs away, hide behind a tree to avoid her guns. If you don’t manage to time your counterattacks use Snow camouflage and Snow facial paint, and hit her with the Mosin Nagant (or Mk22) to tranquillize The Boss and get Snake camo. This camo allows you to get significant camo index in many areas.

Tsuchinoko:
If you want to get the Infinite Face Paint (Special Item) or collect all food, this is the most difficult food to find. The easiest strategy is eliminate all animals in Graniny Gorky South area using the sonar to locate them. Once all other animals are gone, place several mousetraps and leave the area. Re-entering, you will find other animals in the mousetraps. Collect them and repeat the process. Eventually you will finally find the Tsuchinoko!
Note: Re-capture it, after retrieving your equipment in Tikhogornij. This time no mousetraps are required. It looks like a snake. You can find it by going back outside the waterfall.

Groznyj Grad Stealth Path Guide
When you reach Grozny Grad, the ideal path to follow can be difficult to understand, especially if you are going for Foxhound rank, which requires a speedrun, or if you want to collect every item for a completionist run. The following route minimizes your run time while still covering all areas.
When you arrive in Groznyj Grad Southwest, immediately after The Fury battle, move north along the east wall and enter the northeast gate to reach Groznyj Grad Southeast.
From there, walk to the vehicle and use it as cover while moving to the north side of the area. This allows you to enter in Groznyj Grad Northeast.
If you are doing a completionist run, walk toward the southwest corner of this to area and crawl under the pipes to reach Groznyj Grad Northwest. From there re-enter Groznyj Grad Northeast through the southeast wall.
If you are doing a Foxhound speedrun, skip this step entirely.
In both cases, from Groznyj Grad Northeast, move to the central north part of the area and enter Groznyj Grad Weapons Lab East Wing.
Once upon you are captured and the torture sequence ends, escape from the cell by calling the radio frequency 144.75 when the soldier walks past the door. Run to the west exit of the area to return to Groznyj Grad Southeast.
From there go straight to the west wall in front of you to re-enter Groznyj Grad Northeast. Walk toward the southwest corner of the area to reach Groznyj Grad Northwest.
Proceed to the far exit of this macro-area and you will finally be out of this labyrinth
How to get Foxhound Rank in MGS3 Delta
For an easier run it is strongly recommended to start NG+ on extreme. During the first playthrough select “I like MGS1” when you start the run to get two bonus camo, DPM and Auscam, that advantage your run significantly, respectively giving you double health recovery rate and a reduction of damage taken by 1/3. This due to the fact that in this run the hardest part is represented by boss battles. In fact, during this playthrough you don’t need to meet any requirements, making your way easier. Beat the game collecting all Ga – Ko to acquire AT-Camo. This item (it isn’t a special item) allows you to multiply your camo index of the camo that you are wearing. Tranquillize each boss to collect their camos (for the full strategies see MGS3 Boss Battle Guide – All non-lethal strategies and rewards). This preliminary run gives you a significant advantage in the Foxhound run because in this way you have all the best camos, including AT-Camo, unlocked from the start of the game. Moreover you start with the Patriot (it isn’t a special item) that is very useful against the first part of The Pain Battle. You can complete this run on Very Easy to simplify the collection of all Ga – Ko and camos, or you can complete the playthrough on Extreme that gives you a further important advantage due to the fact that a preliminary extreme run allows you to know better this mode that presents more soldiers and the other differences from lower difficulties as described at the end of the section.
Foxhound requirements and how to achieve them
Complete the game on Extreme or European extreme under the following conditions:
• 5 hours or less
• 0 Alerts
• 0 Kills
• 0 Continues
• 0 Life Medicine
• 5 life bars or less worth of damage
• 20 or less serious injuries
• No special items
Complete the game in under 5 hours
Try to learn enemy position and moves from your first playthrough. Skip all briefings and radio conversations. Keep in mind that survival mode does not pause the timer so if you need a break the only way to avoid wasting time is to enter the survival mode and put the PlayStation on standby. This pauses the timer. The timer is quite generous skipping also all collectibles.
No alerts
Use always most suitable camo combined with AT-Camo. Moss for grass areas that can give you up to 95% camo index while replenishing your stamina in daily outdoor areas, Splitter or Squares for urban zone. Use Spirit camo, that makes your footsteps noiseless, for enemies that you can tranquillize from behind with CQC or Cig Gas Spray. (For full camo guide see Complete Camo and Face Paints Guide).
No kills
Dogs do not count as a kill. Use Desert Tiger Camo that prevents suppressor degradation. Be careful with enemy on Dolinovodno in the Snake Eater operation, don’t tranquilize him when he is on the bridge because he could fall and this can count as kill. Be careful with vultures in the Mountain: if an enemy is attacked by them, this can count as a kill.
No continues.
Use multiple manual save loads. If you die or if you get spotted take the Fake Death Pill to return to the main menu to save time. After you use the only one fake pill again The Fear, if you die or get spotted enter in the survival mode and choose Return to Main Menu from options.
No Life Medicine:
Use the Sneaking Suit against boss to reduce damage taken. In outdoor daily areas use Moss camo to replenish your stamina After a boss, if you want to replenish your health, change the PS5 time to some weeks later (save, go offline and then change the date) and your health will be replenished. You can use the radio frequency to replenish your stamina. You can use each of them one time for frequency. (For full list of healing frequencies see Stamina Recovery Frequencies Guide)
5 or less life bars worth of damage
Keep in mind that about half a life bar of damage is unmissable because story-related.
20 or less serious injuries
Story-related injuries don’t count.
No special items:
Special items are Stealth Camo, Infinity Face Paint and EZ gun. At Camo and Patriot are not special items.
Differences between extreme difficulty and lower difficulty
• Less food
• More soldiers in every area
• Less ammo capacity and availability
• Soldiers can see you from further away
• Boss deal more damage and they need more hits to defeat them

Then take the underground tunnel to go to the opposite exit of the tunnel and tranquillize the fifth soldier from the tunnel. Be careful of the soldier on the roof. Exit the tunnel from the west side and tranquillize soldiers along the way. From far away tranquillize the soldier on the roof.
- Revolver Ocelot
Shoot the hornet’s nest situated on a tree to scare Ocelot and give you a chance of free shots. Shoot the Markhor you will have another good chance. Don’t shoot Ocelot when he runs or immediately after he gets shot; instead hit him when he is still and when he reloads. Learn the spots and be careful with the Coral Snake. Headshot cause him to lose his hat, giving you another window to shoot him. Tranquillizing him grants you the Animal camo that prevents you from shaking while using guns when your stamina is low, helping you to avoid to consume food in those circumstances. Keep in mind that if you are on NG+ and you have just got the camo in the previous playthrough (or you aren’t interested in acquiring the camo) using a lethal weapon to defeat him doesn’t count as a kill.
- The Pain
Hit The Pain as soon as possible at the very start of the battle. Remove his shield using a lethal weapon (grenades, M37, or Patriot if you are on NG+). Use the rock for cover and stay in the water when he attacks you, using grenades to avoid the bees’ attack. Keep in mind to use the cure menu to remove bullet bees. After removing his shield use mk.22 to tranquillize him obtaining in this way Hornet Stripe camo. This camo gives you a special ability: when you shoot a hornet’s nest, the hornets harmlessly follow while attacking enemy guards. If you are on NG+ run, wear Hornet Stripe Camo to reduce the damage taken from him.
- The Fear
When the battle start use Death Pill, and when The Fear is near use revival pill, then immediately throw a stun grenade at him and shoot him using Patriot or Mk.22. Tranquilizing him you can get Spider Camo that allows you to get significant high camo index in most areas although it consume a lot of stamina. Keep in mind that if you are on NG+ and you have just got the camo in the previous playthrough (or you aren’t interested in acquiring the camo) using a lethal weapon to defeat him doesn’t count as a kill.
- The End
If you don’t find him this way use the thermal goggles to see his reverse footprints and the mic to hear his footsteps.
Relocate him using thermal goggles to see his reverse footprints. If you caught the Parrot you can liberate it: it helps you to find The End through the Parrot’s voice. When you relocate The End, shoot him with the Mk.22 or move toward him very slow and hit him with Cig Gas Spray (located in Graniny Gorki Lab B1 West). When he falls, run way and then throw a stun grenade at him and again use the Mk22.
- The Fury
Round in a big circle, using the hallways along the area to avoid his attacks. If you start to burn, equip the Cardboard Box C (located in Groznyj Grad Southwest) to extinguish the flames instantly. Shoot the red pipes to extinguish the flames near the pipe. Hit The Fury with the Mosin Nagant with tactical reload for double shots. When The Fury has less than two life bars shoot him with mk22 for nearer hits. Tranquillize him gives you Fire Camo that makes you immune from fire. If you go for a second playthrough on NG+ this camo is very useful against The fury himself.
- The Sorrow
To skip this battle, when it starts go underwater and dive until you die. Then take a Revival Pill. This avoids wasting time, especially if you are going for a speedrun. Keep in mind that this method prevents you from acquiring Spirit Camo that makes your footsteps noiseless.
To obtain the Spirit camouflage walk along the river. You will see and, need to avoid, the bodies of every enemies and bosses that you killed, if you are not going for a zero-kills run. When you reached the end of the river avoid the sorrow’s attack by walking diagonally. At the very end of the battle, touch the body of The Sorrow and when you die, use the revival pill to obtain the Spirit Camo. You will get it after the battle when you take your equipment. This camo makes your footsteps noiseless and when you wear it, using CQC on guards restores your stamina.
- Volgin
Keep your weapon unequipped when you don’t use it. This due to the fact that Volgin’s electric attacks empty your ammo. Use the Raiden Mask or throw a Tree Frog at Volgin to distract him, giving you free hits. Use CQC to avoid his attacks and shoot him on his back with Mosin Nagant (or Mk22). Keep in mind that if you are on NG+ and you have just got the camo in the previous playthrough (or you aren’t interested in acquiring the camo) using a lethal weapon to defeat him doesn’t count as a kill.
- Shagohod
In the first part of the battle, shoot the treads with the RPG-7 and then the back of the Shagohod. In the second part of the battle, shoot again the treads and then hit Volgin with the Mosin Nagant (or Mk.22).
- The Boss
When the battle starts unequip your weapon to avoid The Boss disarming you. Wait for her to attack and you can beat her using almost only CQC. Wait for her to attack you, than start CQC and use Mk22 when she is on the ground. When she runs away, hide behind a tree to avoid her guns. If you don’t manage to time your counterattacks use Snow camouflage and Snow facial paint, and hit her with the Mosin Nagant (or Mk22) to tranquillize The Boss and get Snake camo. This camo allows you to get significant camo index in many areas.
How to get Foxhound Rank in the Original Version
For an easier run it is strongly recommended to start NG+ on extreme. During your first playthrough choose Extreme mode, selecting “I like MGS3” when you start your run to get two bonus camo, DPM and Auscam, that advantage you significantly in your first run, due to the fact in this run the hardest part is represented by boss battles. In fact, during this run you can play on extreme without meeting any requirements, which make the run quite easy. Simply beat the game tranquillizing each boss and collecting their camos (for the full strategies see MGS3 Boss Battle Guide – All non-lethal strategies and rewards). This gives you a significant advantage in the Foxhound run because in the Foxhound run you will have all the best camos unlocked from the start of the game and you will start with the Patriot (it isn’t a special item) that is very useful against Ocelot, the first part of The Pain Battle, the Fear Battle and can be used also in the first battle with Volgin. In all of these situations use the Patriot doesn’t count as a kill. A further advantage is that a preliminary run allows you to know better the extreme mode and soldier positions and their paths.

The timer is quite generous skipping also all collectibles.

Use always most suitable camo: Moss for grass areas that can give you up to 95% camo index while replenishing your stamina in daily outdoor areas, Splitter or Squares for urban zone and Spirit camo for enemy you can tranquilize from behind with the CQC or Cig Gas Spray so your footsteps are noiseless. No kills
Ocelot, The Fear and Volgin (first battle) don’t count as a kill. Dogs don’t count. Use Desert Tiger Camo that prevents suppressor degradation. Be carefully with enemy on Dolinovodno in the Snake Eater operation, don’t tranquilize him when he is on the bridge because he could fall and this can count as kill.
No continues.
If you die or if you get spotted take the Fake Death Pill to return to the main menu to save time. After you use the only one Fake Death Pill against The Fear, if you die or get spotted enter in the survival mode and choose Return to Main Menu from options.
No Life Medicine:
Use the Sneaking Suit against bosses to reduce damages taken. After a boss, if you want to replenish your health, change the PS5 time to some weeks later (save, go offline, and then change the date) and your health will be replenished.
20 or less Meals:
In outdoor areas use Moss camo to replenish your stamina. Moreover, the Sneaking suit reduces stamina consumption. In addition to the 20 meals you can use the radio frequency to replenish your stamina. You can use each of them one time per frequency. Gameplay differences between MGS3 Delta and original MGS3
- Delta version introduces Ga – Ko. They are 64, located in each area. Collecting all of them unlocks AT-Camo that multiplies your camo index of the equipped camo. This item (it is not a special item) is very useful to get Foxhound rank.
- The initial “I like MGS” choice has been modified and its relatively bonus camo and facial paints are now different from The Master Collection Version.
- All bosses now count as a kill. So Patriot or other lethal weapons with boss aren’t useful in a zero-kill run, also against Ocelot, The Fear and Volgin.
- The Fear exploit using Fake Death Pill and a stun grenade has been patched in Delta version, so the best strategy becomes the poisoned/rotten food strategy.
- The limit of 25 saves for the Foxhound rank has been removed so you can save as many times as you want using also multiple manual saves.
- Several bonus Camo and Face Paints have been added. They are all obtainable by beating the game (except the content of the Digital Deluxe Edition).
- Now changing camo and face paint is much faster thanks to the quick camo menu.
- Delta version introduces the Secret Teather, unlockable by beating the games, with hidden film reel obtainable during the playthrough from specific enemies.
- Single Action Army is acquired on a NG+ independently of the weapon choice in the last cutscene. In previous version you could acquire it only by choosing the right-gun.
